How Drinking Affects Your Sleep
A glass of wine at the end of the work day sounds inviting some days. Bustle and sleep specialist Dr. Michael Breus, explain that just two drinks at night can affect the certain aspects of your sleep.
- It affects your REM sleep so while you might sleep through the night, the quality of your sleep and the amount of deep sleep that you may receive is interrupted. REM sleep helps with memory and retaining information, so disrupted deep sleep can hinder your brain function.
- It can make your snoring worse which means that you may be disrupting the sleep of those who you share a bedroom with. Alcohol-induced snoring is more common in men than in women, but you and your partner can both keep each other up if you drink two or more drinks before bed.
It can be relaxing to drink a glass of wine or two before bed, but while you might feel better after a long day, it can also set you up for a unsatisfying sleep and a more exhausted tomorrow.
