I spent a lot of this weekend nursing a sour stomach. I try to eat all the right foods, take my vitamins and exercise moderately, but every once in a while I still find myself holding on to a turning stomach or some chest pains. So while I try to keep some healthy habits, it turns out that some of these habits can still mess with your gut health.

  • Eating too much protein can back you up in ways you don't really want to talk about, but high protein diets/low carbohydrate diets can really hurt your insides if you're not careful.
  • Taking new vitamins specifically ones with high doses of iron or magnesium can really plug you up. It's always better to to try and get your vitamins through food, but if that isn't possible for one reason or another, you need to pay attention to what's in the vitamins you're taking and see how you're body is responding to them.
  • Waking up earlier than usual to exercise can really mess up your insides when you disrupt your circadian rhythm. So while you think exercise is good (and it is!) losing sleep to burn some calories may not be the best or healthiest choice.

It's good to want to be healthy, but you always want to listen to your body to make sure you're doing the best things for it. If you need sleep, sleep! If you need to exercise, go for it! But be kind to yourself first.
