When scrolling through photos online of cute animals, how much do you want to adopt a pet? Bustle, and those at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, explain that while cats and dogs are adorable, there are some things to consider before adopting a new friend.

  • Can you afford to take care of a cat? Other than the adoption fee, you have to think about food, toys, treats, vet bills, etc. You might want to consider pet insurance as well. There are shots that you will want to have done if you adopt a kitten, and getting your cat fixed as well so that you don't end up with kittens that you most likely can't afford.
  • Do you have any life changes happening soon? Like are you moving? Going back to school? Getting married? You might be feeling overwhelmed and looking for something constant in your life like a cat, but for the pet's sake, it would be better for them if you wait until things are more settled for you before you bring a new friend home.
  • Do you have any children? If you have children, especially young children, you should definitely make sure that your kids can handle having a cat around, and that the cat that you want to adopt also likes your children. Bring them with you when you go to the local humane society or shelter.

It is so tempting to want to have a cute, fluffy cat in your house... I get it! But there are so many things to consider first before adopting your new best friend.
