How to Leave a Date if You’re Feeling Uncomfortable
In the age of online dating, you never really know who you might be meeting on that first date. Bustle, and psychotherapist Christine Scott-Hudson MA MFT ATR, explain that there are ways you can excuse yourself from a date and leave if you are feeling uncomfortable.
- "I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm ready to date anyone" is essentially the "It's not you, it's me" excuse that you can use to get out of the date quickly. Your date really can't argue with you on this point, too, because if you're not ready then you're not ready!
- Explain that you've gotten a headache or other minor ailment and that you need to go home. If you're not feeling the date tonight, then this might be the best excuse because you can always try going out again with this person in the near future when you're feeling more up to it.
- The exit call is always the fail safe way to go, but it needs to be planned out ahead of time. Let a friend know that you are going out on this date and ask them to call you halfway through. When they call, you can fake an emergency and let your date know that you have to leave right away. It's not the most honest way to escape a date, but it definitely works!
It can be tough dating on the internet because anyone can pretend to be anyone, so if you're not feeling comfortable on your date at all, you should leave. Your safety is more important than anything else.
