Most often, what you believe about love you will bring into a relationship, so if you're beliefs are toxic, the relationship itself may become toxic for you and your partner. Bustle says that there are some common relationship beliefs that could very well be harmful.

  • Your partner needs to be your best friend which is not true, nor should it be an expectation or qualification for how you think that your relationship is going. It's great to have someone that you can go to and confide it, but they don't have to be your best friend and relationship partner. Expecting that could be considered toxic.
  • "If you can't handle me at my worst..." there are some great quotes from history, but this just isn't one of them. If you're dating someone, there will be compromises, but to have to put up with someone's "worst" is dramatic and no one should want to have to do that for you.
  • The idea that you will never get bored because if you get bored then, clearly, they are not the one for you. That is a lie. The best part about my relationship with my fiancé is that we can be bored because there are boring parts about life (work, chores, all of the day-to-day stuff) and I love him more because we're experiencing it all together. Even the boring bits.

How you think a relationship should be like will affect how successful or unsuccessful it will be. It's wonderful if your partner is your best friend, but it's okay if they're not, too.
