While I have always been a proponent of being friends with someone before you date them (it worked for me!), it might be risky if you date your best friend though. Bustle gives a few good reasons why dating your best friend might not be the best idea in the world.

  • Sex changes everything between the two of you. Before you dated this person, you were probably talking them up at bars trying to help them get dates and others interested in them. Now you're interested, but you already know their entire history of relationships before you. Once you cross the boundary of sex, there is no going back.
  • You could lose your best friend forever if the relationship doesn't end up working out. Imagine if you will, a world where you have a break-up with a significant other AND your best friend at the same time. Who can you turn to for support? Ben and Jerry can only do so much...
  • Your best friend knows you too well and knows things that you might have wanted to refrain from telling a new partner. So while you are in a new relationship, it might feel like you are on date #25 instead of date #1.

It could absolutely work out with your best friend if you take things to the next level, but think about everything that you will be giving up... especially if you two end up breaking things off.
