Flash Flooding Hits Parts of Tioga County

Sections of Tioga County have sustained some damage due to flash flooding.

Red Cross volunteers opened a shelter at the Waverly Village Hall for residents who were displaced by the flooding on Wednesday.

Agency officials said residents were welcome to stay at the shelter or stop by the facility for food, water and support.

Police in Waverly reported closing part of Broad Street following the heavy rainfall. A bridge on Route 17C over a creek near the village was closed because of high water.

Several hundred filled sandbags from a state regional stockpile were sent to the town of Nichols in case they were needed.

New York State emergency management representatives were in Tioga County assessing flood-related threats with local government officials.

Twin Tiers residents are getting a short break after several days of heavy rain. National Weather Service forecasters said Thursday would be mostly sunny but they noted strong thunderstorms are possible in the region Friday. A few of those storms could become severe with damaging wind gusts.
