Because I work for the radio station, I am on Facebook and Instagram a lot! Bustle, and Nuno Albuquerque who is an addictions counselor, explains that there are questions to ask yourself if you think that you might have a social media addiction.

  • Do you suffer from insomnia? I definitely lay in bed at night on my phone before finally plugging it in and trying to fall asleep. If you struggle to fall asleep at night because you're on your phone for hours after you lay down, that might be signs of addictive behavior.
  • Are you maintaining your personal hygiene? Or do you skip a shower in the morning so that you can be on Facebook for those precious extra minutes instead. It is easy to justify skipping showers or waiting to do laundry until it becomes an emergency of sorts when you have an addiction that you are battling.
  • Has your work suffered at your school or place of employment? If you're taking time out of your work or class time to like photos on Instagram and your productivity or grades have taken a serious hit, that might be a red flag to your addictive behavior.

Whether you can't stop scrolling away on Facebook, or you like every photo on Instagram, if you think that you have an addiction to social media, you should definitely try to seek help before it hurts your real life even worse.
