Two Seriously Hurt in Chain-Reaction Crash on Route 17 in Waverly
New York State Police say a woman and her passenger are being treated for serious injuries following a crash on Route 17 in Waverly at 3:51 p.m. May 18.
The woman’s Sport Utility Vehicle was traveling east in the right lane when it went into the guiderail, then into the path of a pickup truck and into the path of a tractor trailer, where it was hit broad-side.
State Police say off-duty Emergency Medical Service members were in the area and helped the occupants of the SUV before the ambulance arrived.
The drivers of the pickup and the tractor trailer were not hurt.
The names of the driver and passenger in the SUV have not been released and the investigation is continuing. State Police say they don’t know why the woman’s vehicle went off the road and into the guiderail, setting off the chain-reaction.
The occupants of the SUV were transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
A portion of the Southern Tier Expressway between exits 60 and 62 was closed for several hours.
