Some spots in the Binghamton area wound up with nearly four feet of snow with accumulations much higher than weather forecasters had predicted.

The National Weather Service office at the Greater Binghamton Airport reported the storm broke the all-time record for a two-day snowfall.

As of 1 p.m. Thursday, 40 inches of snow had fallen at the airport in the town of Maine. The previous record for a two-day snowfall was 35.3 inches which was set March 14 to 15, 2017.

According to the weather service, several spots around Broome County reported accumulations exceeding 40 inches from the snowfall that started early Wednesday afternoon.

In Tioga County, a weather spotter reported 44 inches of snow had fallen.

When the winter storm warning took effect Wednesday, forecasters were predicting accumulations of 12 to 20 inches in Broome and Tioga counties.

Heavier snow accumulations had been expected in northeastern Pennsylvania but the storm's path changed bringing the highest snowfall further north than had been anticipated.

The region's record snowfall was noted by The Weather Channel, with on-screen graphics calling attention to the accumulations reported in Binghamton and Endicott. The city's name briefly appeared on screen as "Binghampton" but the typo eventually was corrected.
