The Phelps Mansion in Binghamton will be hosting special lantern lit tours this weekend and next as they ask the question: Have you ever wondered what the mansion is like at night?

These tours will feature talks about Death and Mourning in the Gilded Age. Guests will learn about superstitions, funeral customs and post-mortem photography from the 19th Century.

For instance, during this time those who had recently lost a family member would create wreaths woven from hair of the deceased person to memorialize this loved one, and these wreaths were often displayed in the parlor room for guests to admire when they visited their home. These hair wreaths were a way of documenting family members, much like a family tree. That's not creepy at all.

These tours will be going on at 7pm and 9pm both Friday and Saturday this weekend and next. Get more information and reserve your spots, here. Hopefully we'll see you on the other side.
