Let’s face it, today is a day where stores, restaurants and other business prey on the idea of love and people coupling up in order to get more clientele and make more money. But, since many people like an excuse to spend time doing stuff with the person they love, a lot of us ignore the corporate pushing and use it as an excuse to schedule a date. Still, those who don’t have anyone special or dread the preparations for the holiday tend to sing a different tune.

But what I want to challenge everyone to do today is love yourself.

The world can be a dark place some days, and with all the hustle and bustle of our lives, sometimes we get stressed. A lot of times we get pushed that on a day like today you have to go out and do grand gestures, big events or spend all sorts of money at a crowded, expensive restaurant. This, however, takes away from the fun and enjoyment of having a holiday, and makes it much more of a chore than a celebration.

Whether you’re happily married, in a serious or rocky relationship, searching for the one or not interested at all, take some time to yourself today. Stay in and read a book, cuddle up on the couch at home, go get a bite to eat at a smaller, cheaper place you like: whatever gives you the chance to relax and enjoy the day.

Today is a day for love. So don’t just love others, love yourself.
