Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, Emergency Services officials and educators say since the School Bus Stop Arm Camera program was launched last spring 120 violators were caught on film passing stopped buses that had their lights flashing and stop arm extended.

59 were even caught when the program went live over the summer when fewer buses are on the road.

In 2019 the Broome County Legislature passed the law clearing the way for a demonstration program to try to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses, putting children getting on and off the bus in danger.

Officials are hoping the threat of a fine and the increased chance of getting caught will help deter drivers who, up to this point, just disregard the safety of the students.
