Breastfeeding Moms Can Postpone Jury Duty In NY

Hate jury duty? If you're a breastfeeding mom, you might have a temporary way out of it.

People reports that Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a new law that allows breastfeeding moms in New York State to postpone jury duty. Under this law, they are able to postpone jury duty for up to two years. This was signed into law on Monday, October 21, 2019.

New York State is now the 18th state to enact such legislation. According to People, it joins California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah and Virginia in allowing breastfeeding moms to postpone jury duty.

Governor Cuomo said "While jury service is a critically important civic duty, we also know new moms oftentimes juggle countless responsibilities and navigate enormous adjustments in the early stages of their child’s life. This commonsense measure takes that reality into account by providing new moms the flexibility and option to postpone jury service while they care for a newborn." in a statement, as reported by People.
