Binghamton Man Accused in Fatal Shooting at Elmira Speedway Store
Police say a Binghamton resident has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a man who was repeatedly shot at a convenience store in Elmira.
34-year-old Khalid Abdul-Wahhad of Binghamton was arrested following the shooting at the Speedway shop at 300 Maple Avenue.
Elmira police were called to the store around 3:40 a.m. Saturday. A short time later, they were advised that a man who had been shot was at Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
Investigators say 44-year-old Shamal Gladden of Elmira was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police say Gladden is believed to have intervened after he saw a friend's daughter being "verbally accosted" by several men at the Speedway store.
Gladden sustained multiple gunshot wounds after one of the men opened fire.
A news release did not indicate where investigators found Abdul-Wahhad or when he was taken into custody.
