Binghamton Girl Killed in Shooting Was East Middle School Student
Binghamton City School District officials say the girl who died after being shot was a sixth-grade student at East Middle School.
In a message to school families Friday afternoon, principal Michael Holly wrote that he was "heartbroken to inform you of a devastating loss."
Holly identified the 12-year-old girl who was killed late Thursday night as Aliza Spencer. He wrote: "Aliza was a bright, talented student, who will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by her classmates, as well as our faculty and staff here at East. Our hearts go out to the Spencer family as they grieve this horrible loss."
In the email message, Holly said students were informed of the death of their classmate Friday morning. He said the school "will continue to provide them with as much support as possible as they cope with this terrible news."
Holley said additional staff and counselors were available at East Middle School throughout the day for those who need support.
Aliza reportedly was shot in the chest around 10 p.m. Thursday on Bigelow Street just south of East Frederick Street.
Sections of Bigelow and Chamberlain streets were closed while investigators scoured the area for shell casings and other evidence related to the shooting.
No arrests have been reported in the attack.
