Three Detained After Binghamton West Side Killing

A man died after he was shot several times in a parking lot on the West Side of Binghamton. Three people who may have been involved in the shooting are being held by police.

The man was gunned down in the parking lot of a 12-unit apartment building at 58 Floral Avenue around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday.

City police chief Joseph Zikuski said the man was pronounced dead a short time later at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. Zikuski did not release the name of the man, who apparently was visiting the apartment complex and did not live there.

Speaking early Tuesday afternoon before a Police Awards Ceremony downtown, Zikuski said "at this point it appears it was some type of domestic incident."

Minutes after the shooting, police put out an "attempt to locate" seeking a silver Honda Accord in connection with the incident.

Zikuski said investigators believed the vehicle "contained our suspects." A Pennsylvania state trooper spotted the car and, Zikuski said, "after a short pursuit, they were able to stop" the vehicle.

Three people were taken into custody without incident on Interstate 81 near the Gibson exit in Susquehanna County.

Zikuski told WNBF News no one had yet been charged in connection with the shooting. He said there could be extradition issues involved in having anyone involved in the incident returned to New York state. He said they could be back in Binghamton soon or "it could be a matter of days."

Zikuski said no other injuries were reported in connection with the fatal shooting. He said "in excess of ten or fifteen" shots were fired in the incident.

The police chief said it was too early to know "if there was more than one shooter."

Zikuski said he was not aware of any other police calls to the Floral Avenue location involving domestic disputes or other problems.
