Police and fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that ripped through a two-story house in Binghamton.

The blaze at 8 Truesdell Street was reported around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters initially were told three people were trapped on the second floor of the burning building. They eventually determined everyone made it out of the building safely.

One Binghamton police officer was treated at Lourdes Hospital for smoke inhalation and released.

The blaze in the two-family building was declared extinguished just after 6 a.m.

City fire marshal Alan Gardiner said investigators are focusing on the first floor as the area where the fire originated. He declined to discuss a possible cause.

Late Tuesday afternoon Binghamton police detective Lieutenant Cory Minor said the blaze remained under investigation.

The Red Cross was assisting the building's residents who were displaced by the fire.
