$20 Million Housing Complex Planned in Vestal

A vacant Vestal building could be brought back to life if a developer moves forward with a proposal to convert the flood-damaged facility into apartments.

Town supervisor John Schaffer said he has met with Isaac Anzaroot and his attorneys to discuss what's expected to be a $20 million project.

The senior housing complex would be developed in the building that for decades housed the Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Vestal Road.

The facility sustained extensive damage as the result of flooding in September 2011. A new nursing home was built on West Sheedy Road to take its place.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Schaffer said Anzaroot is working to finalize plans for the new housing complex.

Schaffer said there are "a lot of hurdles" ahead before construction could start on the project. He said if it becomes a reality, it will "really enhance that area."

The supervisor said the developer is taking steps to ensure that vital equipment will be located on the roof of the complex so it won't be damaged by any future flood.

Residents who live near the old nursing home have complained of people trespassing on the property over the last few years. Schaffer said he had not been aware of any significant problems at the site.
