I moved to Binghamton back in 1977 to start a new job in radio. And I was quickly introduced to some of the great bars and nightclubs in our area. The first was Popeyes in the Northgate Plaza, Upper Front Street, Binghamton.

Popeyes was our place to go for a fun time and to see some pretty cool local and regional bands. I remember going to Popeyes to see the Todd Hobin Band. Check out an interesting article about Todd and the band from syracuse.com published in 2014 and updated in 2019.

In the 1980s and 1990s, you'd find me at a few other Binghamton areas bars and nightclubs with my co-workers at The Whale. The number of bar promotions we did over the years was staggering, and we loved every one of them. Well, except for the fact that we were not allowed to drink while we were on the job, but after that, well, you know.

If you followed The Whale to the various bars across the Triple Cities, you know some of the crazy things we used to do. I recall a lip-synch promotion we did back in the 80s at The Woods nightclub (formerly the Power & Light Company), which used to be just off the Vestal Parkway and Plaza Drive next to Fox 40. We performed 'Mr. Roboto' by Styx. It was horribly funny.

And do you remember 'Club TV" at Scandals! It was the dance club on the second floor of The Woods. Every week, we recorded a 30-minute show. Check out the video.

I left Binghamton from 1980 to 1982, but when I returned, I remember doing Whale events and DJing at the Scotch & Sirloin, located on Plaza Drive, Vestal. This restaurant and bar was part of a franchise out of Syracuse. Syracuse.com had an interesting article about the history of the Scotch & Sirloin franchise.

Here are nine former bars/nightclubs where I used to hang out in the 70s through the 90s. What was your favorite hangout?
