Wegmans Pasta Sauce Recalled in New York for a Fishy Reason

A popular pasta sauce from the Wegmans grocery store chain has been recalled for a fishy reason. Literally.

24-ounce jars of Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce have been recalled by the manufacturer, LiDestri Foods, over concerns that the pasta sauce may contain undeclared fish, in the form of anchovy.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to anchovy run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products."

The Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce was sold at Wegman’s grocery stores in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, and North Carolina between Monday, April 3, 2023, and Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

The only expiration date affected is March 31, 2025, with the code F0589 and the sauce can be identified as a mason jar with red pasta sauce, called Diavolo.

Although there have been no reported illnesses at this time, it was customer complaint that the Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo Pasta Sauce containing anchovies was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of anchovies which led to the recall.

An investigation into the matter discovered that the reason anchovies was left off as an ingredient was caused by a temporary breakdown in LiDestri Foods’ packaging processes.

If you purchased Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce with a March 31, 2025 expiration date (and code F0589), you are asked to return it to your nearest Wegmans store in exchange for a full refund.
