A New York State trooper and a man who was wanted by authorities were reported injured following what was described as a police-involved shooting in Binghamton.

Authorities said the incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday near Conklin Avenue and Alfred Street on the city's South Side.

State police said a trooper was pursuing a man wanted on an arrest warrant.

Officials said the suspect intentionally struck the trooper with a vehicle. During an altercation, the trooper reportedly fired a single shot, striking the man.

The suspect fled the scene. He was apprehended a short time later in a nearby residential area. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Binghamton police, Broome County sheriff's deputies, along with state police investigators and troopers converged on the area.

Conklin Avenue was closed between John and Tompkins street because of police activity. A command post vehicle from the Broome County Sheriff's Office was brought to the scene near a small retail plaza.

State police investigators set up crime scene tape on Hancock Street, a few blocks to the west. They were canvassing the neighborhood in an effort to locate people who may have had useful information.

Investigators said the trooper sustained non-life threatening injuries. They did not provide specific information about the nature of the injuries sustained by either man, although they said both were in stable condition.

Binghamton police chief Joseph Zikuski and state police Troop C commander Major William McEvoy conferred with investigators at the scene.

Streets in the area were all reopened about five hours after the incident.
