The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for several counties in upstate New York and northeastern Pennsylvania.

The watch was posted early Tuesday afternoon. Forecasters said it was scheduled to be in effect until 8 p.m.

The watch area includes Broome, Chenango, Cortland and Delaware counties in New York. It also includes Susquehanna, Wayne, Lackawanna and Pike counties in Pennsylvania.

The weather service has advised residents across the entire region to be prepared for severe thunderstorms.

Forecasters said some of those storms could become strong to severe with damaging winds posing the primary threat in the Southern Tier of New York into the southern Catskills and the northeast portion of Pennsylvania.

Locally heavy rainfall could occur along with minor flooding in urban and poor drainage areas.
