Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard is sending out a scam alert to the community.

The Sheriff’s Office says someone claiming to be from the Civil Processing Division tells the would-be victim they owe a court-ordered civil fee and must settle with a prepaid Visa card from a local drug store to avoid further court action.

The Sheriff says Court-ordered judgements are never settled over the phone and officials will not ask for credit cards or wire money transfers.

Residents are advised to disregard any calls from someone demanding cash payments and do not give out personal identifying information over the phone unless you know to whom you are talking and the reason they want the information.

In Tioga County, if you get a suspicious phone call, contact the Sheriff’s Office at (607) 687-1010.
