Valentine’s Day Traditions That Are Both Creepy and Cute
Valentine's Day is on Wednesday, so many of you probably have no idea what to do for your significant other that day yet. Bustle made a list of traditions from history surrounding Valentine's Day, none of which would I recommend you do for your partner or crush.
- Gifting a quail's egg to your partner was a big part of Valentine's Day tradition in the Medieval period of European history because it was thought that February 14th was the one day of the year that all bird's chose who they would mate with all year long. A quail's egg was quite the gift to be given on this day!
- Drawing your partner in a lottery is one way to end the evening (but only if you're lucky!). Ancient Romans would show up to a party and take turns pulling each other's names out of a hat or jar. The name you chose was who you would be spending the evening with that night. Yikes!
- Marrying the first person you saw that day which showed up in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream that on whoever a woman first saw on Valentine's day that she would fall madly in love with them and want to marry them.
However you decide to spend Valentine's Day this year, chocolates and flowers are probably much more preferred than a quail's egg these days.
