School Mental Health Training Begins in New York State

As more and more schools in the region swing open their doors for the resumption of classes this week, the Mental Health Association in New York State has officially launched the School Mental Health Resource and Training Center.

The program will help all state public and private schools with the implementation of a new law requiring mental health education in all Kindergarten through 12 grade classes.

Officials say this is the first school year since the state enacted the one-of-its kind law in the nation that makes sure all elementary, middle and high school students receive instruction on mental health and wellness.

Districts are being assisted in establishing community partnerships, identifying resources and developing plans for continued education of family, community and staff.  Schools are also encouraged to engage students and families to help expand the impact of the law in communities.
