Vestal Police Investigation Snarls Route 201 Traffic
A police investigation caused lengthy delays for motorists on the Route 201 bridge over the Susquehanna River.
Authorities say a man who had been sought by Vestal police was taken into custody on the bridge shortly before noon Thursday.
An investigator said police officers struggled with the man before he was taken into custody. No injuries were reported.
The man had tossed an item into the river moments earlier. Police called the Johnson City fire department to search the water and retrieve what was described as a "piece of evidence."
Two village firefighters used a small boat to check a shallow section of the river just east of the Route 201 bridge. With direction from a police officer standing on the bridge, a small black backpack was retrieved from the river.
A Vestal police investigator and a patrol officer looked inside the bag before taking it to the police station.
Police did not immediately release information about the case involving the man they had been seeking.
