The hand sanitizer is packaged in pouches, which might look familiar to parents -- usually this style of pouch holds squeezable applesauce, or baby food.

WIVB reports the Oklahoma Center for Poison and Drug Information put out the warning, with its director saying:

“They have a very similar appearance to an applesauce or one of the snack pouches that a child would use,” said Scott Schaeffer.

The main ingredient in hand sanitizer is alcohol.

“The alcohol that’s in these products is a very high concentration. Think whiskey or even stronger than that, so a very small amount can have a very great impact on a small child,” said Schaeffer.

Poison control recommends keeping all hand sanitizers away from small children, and to call poison control right away if a child has ingested hand sanitizer.

Based on a similar report from Health Canada, it appears the pouches are available outside the United States as well.
