Planning an overnight stay in Buffalo anytime soon? You might want to be careful where you stay before Buffalo has landed on a pretty disgusting list. Buffalo joins New York City on Orkin’s list of cities in the United States most overrun by…bed bugs.

The good news is that New York City didn’t top the list this year, it slid to the third spot on the list (just below Chicago and Philadelphia) so there’s that. Buffalo took the 28th spot on the list.

Also on the list and relatively close to the Southern Tier is Harrisburg which found itself on the list for the first time ever, coming in at number 42 out of the top 50 most bed bug-ridden states.

Orkin releases the list each year after looking at how many people had to call an exterminator to help get rid of the nasty little bugs over the course of twelve months.
Ben Hottel is an Orkin entomologist and says "Bed bugs are a concern for everyone because they are master hitchhikers, traveling home with people when they likely don't realize it."

Whether or not you’re planning a trip to a city that is known for having a problem with bed bugs, or not, it’s not a bad idea to check for them before crawling under the blankets. Check well, under mattresses, sheets, couch cushions, you get the idea. Hottel says that unfortunately because the hospitality industry is dealing with an employee shortage and are trying their best to make sure things are clean, “travelers should be mindful of bed bug sightings and proactive in inspection efforts."

Bed bugs feed off human blood and they are nocturnal little boogers that are 3/16 inch long and red or dark brown. If you spot a bed bug where you are staying, you should notify hotel/motel staff immediately.
