Memorial Day has still had some parade and ceremony in a number of Southern Tier communities, in spite of a ban on large gatherings of people.

Municipalities like Johnson City, Endicott, Binghamton and Owego held quickly-organized drive-by parades as well as scaled-down ceremonies at local cemeteries and memorial monuments.

A number of organizations that plan traditional Memorial Day observances had announced plans were being shifted for a combined Memorial Day/Veterans’ Day observance later this year.

Around New York State, tributes to the country's war dead and the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II were combined with tributes to coronavirus victims and frontline workers.

At the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in Manhattan New York Governor Andrew Cuomo honored both the military and essential workers while announcing state and local governments will provide death benefits to the families of workers on the front line of the coronavirus fight who have lost their lives due to the pandemic.  The Democrat also called on the federal government to also offer death benefits.
