Owego Remembers Our Veterans This Weekend
Memorial Day is the date most people circle to begin their summer fun activities, like BBQ’s, camping and many other warm weather events, and getting caught up in the weekend we sometimes forget that its also about remember those who have given their lives so we can enjoy the things we do.
The Village of Owego is just one of many communities throughout our country that will remember our veterans this weekend, with visits to memorials to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to give us our freedoms.
The Tioga County Veterans Memorial along with the Civil War Union Memorial in Court House Square will have visitors throughout the three-day weekend, and the flag will be at half-staff.
Many will pay visits to the cemeteries to pay their respects to all who have served our country, and local residents ill wear red poppies which is the symbol of loss of life
The pandemic continues to put some restriction on the parades and gathering that we look forward to each Memorial Day, and once again this year the Owego Patriotic Motor Vehicle Convoy will begin on Monday at 10am, starting at Temple Street by the Owego Police Station.
Many vehicles, including classic cars carrying local members of organizations and area leaders will join the ride, followed by remembrance ceremonies, and the Owego VFM Honor Guard will fire a rifle salute as a memorial wreath will be tossed from the Court Street Bridge off Front Street to remember the fallen Navy personal lost at sea.
This weekend as you enjoy some of life’s happier moments, and create wonderful memories with friends and family, lets not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
