Lupo: Spiedie Meat Prices Soaring, Shortages Possible

Supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are resulting in higher spiedie prices and could lead to some shortages as grilling season gets underway.

The raw meat used by spiedie purveyor Sam A. Lupo & Sons in the town of Union now is much more expensive than it was two months ago.

Sam Lupo said pork prices rose by 66 percent in a single week and the cost of chicken is 63 percent higher than it was in March.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Lupo said "it's outrageous where prices are going."

Up until now, the company has been holding the line on what it charges it customers for packaged spiedie products. But that's about to change. Lupo is planning to raise prices seven percent.

The supply of chicken has been fairly stable in recent weeks but Lupo has been encountering problems obtaining pork. A shipment that was expected Friday did not arrive.

Lupo said there the company's pork sausage products have been in short supply in stores and he said there may be some supply issues with pork spieidies in the coming weeks.

The news is better for spiedie traditionalist who prefer lamb. Lupo has been able to obtain adequate quantities for the company's anticipated spiedie production needs.
