Legal Weed But No Budget for New York State
New York State may have legal marijuana but it doesn’t have a budget on time.
The spending plan was due to be in place by 12:00 a.m. April 1 but a number of sticking points are still being debated including an increase in taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers.
Also up in the air is the legalization of mobile sports betting and the specifics of the aid funding going to schools and localities.
New York has been battling a multi-billion dollar shortfall, much of which is fueled by the loss of revenue coming from the pandemic and the total shutdown of the economy a year ago.
There is a possibility a deal could be reached on the remaining measure by the weekend. Meanwhile the legislators were able to pass the measure needed for the state to be able to pay its bills until a final budget is in place.
