The National Weather Service in Binghamton says areas east of Interstate 81 now appear most likely to reach below freezing overnight October 4.

Anyone needing to protect sensitive vegetation should make preparations to cover plants or move them to protected areas.

The forecast going into the week had predicted scattered areas of frost but that likelihood had continued to increase in spite of record high warmth that hit the area on Tuesday with the mercury topping out in the low 80's.

Friday night is calling for a low right around freezing with calm winds, making conditions right for the first frost of the season.

Above freezing lows in the 50's and 40's are predicted through the early part of next week following Friday night’s chill.
