Flash Flood Watches Expand Into Twin Tiers Ahead of Ida

Flash Flood Watches are being expanded in anticipation of the arrival of what is left of Hurricane Ida.

The tropical depression is expected to impact the northeast, including the Twin Tiers starting September 1.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Flash Flood Watch from 8 a.m. Wednesday, September 1 to through 2 p.m. Thursday, September 2 for Delaware County in New York and Bradford, Susquehanna and Wayne Counties in Pennsylvania.

Watches extend south through most of Pennsylvania except for the upper western portion of the state as well as down through the Hudson Valley and into New York City.

According to a statement from the NOAA office in Binghamton, the remains of Ida are expected to pass south of the Greater Binghamton area Wednesday into Thursday but the deep tropical moisture and stalled frontal boundary will bring bands of heavy rain into parts of northeast Pennsylvania and the western Catskills.

Forecasters anticipate the heaviest bands of rain could produce three to five inches of rain Wednesday night.

That amount of rain could result in flash flooding.

Ida’s track could still shift, impacting what areas get the most rain. Residents are reminded to keep up on the latest weather updates and be prepared to take action especially if they live or work in flood-prone areas.
