In the words of Dean Martin and Martina McBride "Baby, It's Cold Outside." There is a Wind Chill Advisory in effect for many parts of the Southern Tier with temperatures in the single digits and wind chills as low as -20 tonight.

The cold and windy weather will continue on Friday with gusts as high as 30 mph and wind chills getting to 15 below on Friday night. So what should we do before the extreme cold arrives, so we can avoid frostbite and hypothermia?

Here are some suggestions from the National Weather Service:

Dress for the outdoors: Even if you think that you're going out for a short period of time, this is how you should dress for the cold weather.

Adjust your schedule: If you have to go outside, avoid doing it during the coldest part of the day

Fill up the tank of your vehicle: Make sure your car or truck has at least a half a tank of gas and try to do it before the extreme cold hits. This also will help you stay warm if you get stranded. Remember the man who was stuck in his car in Tioga County when we got the HUGE snowstorm in December? Speaking of vehicles.

Make sure you have a winter car survival kit. One of the things that I always tell my daughters is to take an extra coat, hat, and gloves. If you don't need them, you can just leave them in the car, it's not like you have to carry them around with you.

Better safe than sorry.  Go here to see what you should have in your survival kit and other things that you can do NOW to prepare for the extreme cold weather.
