Eleven Homeless Following Blaze on Binghamton’s East Side

Authorities say six adults and five children are safe after an early-morning fire in a Binghamton apartment house.

The blaze at 32 Griswold Street was reported around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Fire department Lieutenant Bob Gaffney said all occupants of the four-unit building were able to escape without injury.

Gaffney said the fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen area of a first-floor apartment.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the first and second floors on the west side of the building. The fire also extended into sections of the attic.

The Binghamton fire marshal's office is working to determine the cause of the blaze.
