As you may have heard, there's a big election coming up November 6th.  If you have never registered to vote, or have moved since the last time you did, the deadline for registration is approaching.  Don't worry though, you still have time.  Here's what you need to know to get yourself registered for this November's big election.

The deadline to register to vote is October 12th to vote in this November's General Election according to the New York State Board of Elections website.  In order to vote, you must meet all of the following qualifications:

  • be a United States citizen;
  • be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file the form (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote);
  • live at your present address at least 30 days before an election;
  • not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction and;
  • not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court;
  • not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

Registering to vote can be done a number of ways.

You can go directly to the Broome County Board of Elections in the Government Plaza in downtown Binghamton during office hours by October 12th. You can also visit any of these government offices who accept applications through the "Motor Voter" Act.

You can register by mail as well. The NYS Board of Elections website allows you to either enter your name to have the form mailed to you, or download the form directly to your computer.  You can also call 1-800-FOR-VOTE to have the form sent to your house.  Make sure the filled out form is postmarked by October 12th.

If you have moved since the last time you voted:

The same form used to register is also used for change of address. Change of address must be received by October 17th.

Identification:

This is what the New York State Board of Elections website says about voter ID.

"Verifying your identity

We’ll try to check your identity before Election Day, through the DMV number (driver’s license number or non-driver ID number), or the last four digits of your social security number, which you’ll fill in below.

If you do not have a DMV or social security number, you may use a valid photo ID, a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or some other government document that shows your name and address. You may include a copy of one of those types of ID when you mail this form.

If we are unable to verify your identity before Election Day, you will be asked for ID when you vote for the first time."

You can't complain your candidate lost if you don't vote, so make sure to register...AND VOTE!!!
