The 22nd Congressional Contest Could Possibly Go to Recount
The continuing count of votes in New York's 22nd Congressional District is setting up the possibility of a recount as the race continues to tighten.
Over a week after Election Day, officials in the eight counties that make up the district are continuing the count of absentee and military ballots.
When polls closed on November 3rd, Republican Claudia Tenney seemed poised to win back her Congressional seat that was taken from her two years earlier by Democrat Anthony Brindisi.
Tenney had been in the lead by tens of thousands of votes over the days following the early and in-person balloting but the hand-count has seen that lead slowly shrinking.
As of last evening, the former congresswoman is now a couple-thousand votes ahead of current Congressman Anthony Brindisi with Chenango County just starting its tally of paper votes today.
Legal papers had been filed to secure the ballots and neither side has claimed victory saying all are waiting for every vote to be counted.
The race turns unusual national attention to the largely rural region that includes Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Cortland and four other counties as the fight for control of Congress has been underway. Democrats continue to hold a narrow majority in the House.
