Broome County is showing gains on the health front.

The Health Department says Broome has been moved up on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute rankings to 53 out of the 62 counties in the state.  Last year it was ranked 55th and 56th in 2016.

The rankings use data related to health factors and include premature death, length of life and other factors.

In the 2018 County Health Rankings, Broome was listed 8 out of the 61 New York counties for physical environment that includes water and air quality, housing and transit.

Officials say there was a significant improvement in health behaviors that involve things like tobacco, alcohol and drug use, diet, exercise and sexual activity.

The full rankings are available at www.countyhealthrankings.org.
