Broome County Applies for Age-Friendly Community Designation

Broome County is hoping to be friendlier to people of all ages.  The County plans to apply this summer to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities.

The Network includes cities and counties committed to creating neighborhoods that are inclusive and accessible to residents of all ages, especially older adults.

Broome County Office for Aging director, Lisa Schyke says they anticipate the number of residents 60 and older to rise from 22 to 28% by 2020.

Under the program, communities complete an action plan that includes input from several departments to develop a multi-step process to prepare for the growing aging population.

Broome County Office for Aging will coordinate a Task Force to identify needs, set goals and lead the implementation of a plan.
