Binghamton U-Haul Storage Facility Damaged in Smash-and-Run Crash
A self-storage building in Binghamton sustained extensive damage when a car crashed through a fence and slammed into the structure before driving away.
Authorities say the incident at U-Haul Moving and Storage at 262 Front Street occurred around 1:30 a.m. Friday.
A woman who lives across the street from the crash scene said she heard a "loud noise." She said she say a medium-size silver-gray car next to the storage building.
The woman said the man who had been driving the car got out of the vehicle and looked underneath it. He stayed at the scene "for three or four minutes" before backing up onto Front Street and driving off in the car, which had sustained heavy front end damage.
Police located the vehicle a short time later. The driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
It was not known whether charges would be filed in connection with the crash.
A U-Haul representative said three 8-by-10-foot storage units were damaged in the incident.
