Binghamton Signs Clean Energy Deal

The City of Binghamton is shifting to 100% renewable energy products for its electric usage starting May 1.

The City is buying renewable energy certificates through its supplier, Constellation, that allow for the “environmental attributes from renewable sources without being physically tied to them.”  Binghamton’s renewable energy will come from wind farms within the United States.  The power will be used for street lights, government buildings and fire stations.

Mayor Richard David’s office says actually, part of the $13,000 a year cost is being covered through the savings the City is getting from the conversion to LED streetlights several years ago.

The Republican Mayor outlined plans to move to 100% of the City’s energy needs to be powered by renewable sources in February during his State of the City address.
