Binghamton police say a blaze in a South Side apartment house was set by a man who later died of a self-inflicted wound.

Firefighters discovered the unresponsive man on the second floor of the building at 13 John Street. A fire was reported in the house around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Detective Captain John Ryan said an autopsy was performed at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City Friday. The manner of death was ruled a suicide caused by a self-inflicted wound to the head.

The man, whose name was not released by police, had lived in the building since at least January.

Ryan said he set fire to a wooden door and a wall in a common living area of the rooming house.

Five other people were residing in the building a the time of the fire. Ryan said no other injuries were reported.
