The New York State Department of Labor is reporting the Southern Tier continues to lose jobs while much of the state is enjoying growth.

According to the December statistics, the Binghamton Labor Market, that includes Broome and Tioga Counties, lost 100 non-farm jobs while Elmira lost 300. The Utica-Rome area also lost 100 jobs. Glens Falls dropped 1,000 jobs. Ithaca posted a whopping 2,200 jobs in the plus column for the month.  Downstate, Orange-Rockland-Westchester lost 500 jobs but the rest of that area of the state posted gains. 

New York City gained 78,000 jobs while Nassau-Suffolk Counties added 7,600 non-farm positions.

The labor department says the moth rapid growth in the state was Ithaca at 4% and New York City at 1.8%.

Fields with the most hires for the year were Education and Health Services, Professional and Business Services and Leisure and Hospitality.

Taking the biggest hits were Manufacturing, down 7,200, Financial Activities and other services, both losing 4,400 jobs for the year.
