My son Devon was involved in a youth golf association called the USGLL when he was growing up. It was a chance for boys and girls between the age of 8 and 14 to try the game of golf.

He participated in the USGLL National Tournament several times including a trip to California. I had the chance to take him and it was a time that neither of us will ever forget.

Tara tried the USGLL for a year before she decided that golf wasn't really for her. The upside was that she had a chance to try it. Kids can learn so much from golf including respect and fair play. It gives you a chance to meet people that you might have never meet any other way.

One of the kids that Devon met during his USGLL years was Riley Brown. His dad, Rick owns Conklin Players Club and was involved with the USGLL back in the day too. Riley attends and golfs at SUNY Delhi and he's bringing something similar to the USGLL to our area this summer.

It's the Southern Tier Junior Golf Tour for boys and girls age 15 to 18 years old. There will be different formats including stroke play and best ball.

So far eight golf courses in the area are participating including Conklin Players Club, Belden Hill Golf Course, Afton Golf Course, The Links at Hiawatha Landing Golf Course, Traditions at the Glen Golf Course, Chenango Valley State Park Golf Course, Endwell Golf Course, and Golden Oaks Golf Course.

It is a competitive tournament but it's really more about the opportunity to play. They hope to begin in mid-June and they plan on announcing the tournament soon, go here to sign up and get more information.
