I'm trying. Tax season has begun, and I'm trying to find all the required paperwork needed to bring to the appointment with my tax preparer. Oh, yea, I also need to make an appointment. Sure, I'm an organized kind of guy. Yea, right.

Anyway, the New York State Department of Finance and Taxation has announced that tax filing season is open. And if your 2021 income is $73,000 dollars or less, there is a free file website with software you can use for state and federal tax filing.

The NYS Department of Finance and Taxation recommends that if you received unemployment insurance in 2021, you'll need to download and fill out the form 1099-G and be sure to include the full amount on your state personal income tax return.

After you have completed your tax return documents and sent them in, you can check the status of your return online or if you don't have access to getting online, you can call 1-518-457-5149.

The Broome County United Way has announced a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, with IRS certified volunteers to provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

You must have earned less than $66,000 in 2021, you work and live in New York State, have no rental property income or other state income. And you may be eligible to have your tax returns filed for free and qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) according to the Broome County United Way.
