The National Weather Service in Binghamton is updating what had been a watch for winter weather to a Winter Storm Warning from noon Saturday, January 19 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 20.

Officials are saying heavy snow, accumulating 12 to 20 inches is expected for Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Tioga and Tompkins Counties, among others in New York State and Susquehanna and Bradford Counties in Pennsylvania.

In addition, NOAA says winds could gust as high as 35 mph Sunday afternoon, with areas of blowing and drifting snow.

As of 4 a.m. (Friday), officials said the heaviest snow was expected to fall Saturday evening into Sunday morning. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour being possible during this time.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Also, winds will pick up considerably Sunday afternoon, causing blowing snow and dangerously low wind  chills into Sunday night.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
