A mural proclaiming "Black Lives Matter" has been painted on a street in downtown Binghamton.

The public art project was proposed by Kristen Mann, an artist who lives in the city.

Mann sought and obtained approval for the mural from Binghamton City Council.

An online GoFundMe campaign set up by Mann had an announced goal of $1,200. According to the website, $3,200 had been raised for the project.

Mann expressed appreciation for the donations that paid for supplies and other costs associated with the project.

Volunteers worked over the weekend to paint large yellow letters on a section of Wall Street along the Chenango River. The mural is located near the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade at the west end of Henry Street.

Similar "Black Lives Matter" murals have been painted in several other U.S. cities in recent weeks.
