Union-Endicott's Ty Cobb Stadium Reconstruction Nearly Complete

Construction workers are putting the finishing touches on a $1.3 million modernization project at Ty Cobb Stadium in Endicott.

New bleachers have been installed and other enhancements have been made at the facility behind Union-Endicott High School.

Toby Riddleberger, the school district's director of facilities and safety, said things "went well" with the hand rail installation on Tuesday. He said the stadium should be ready for Friday's scheduled football game.

Some preliminary construction work for the project began during spring break last April. Demolition crews began removing the old bleachers in late June, shortly after graduation ceremonies were held.

New concrete risers were installed in recent weeks before aluminum seating was put in place.

Additional seating is being added at the top of the stands to provide handicap accessibility.

Union-Endicott School District voters approved the plan to renovate the stadium in a 2019 capital project referendum.

The stadium is named in honor of Harold "Ty" Cobb, who was a U-E football coach for nearly four decades.

The facility is used by the school district for football games and special events. President Ronald Reagan spoke to a large crowd at the stadium during a campaign rally in September 1984.
